The 4th Annual ECD & Basic Education Conference 2024 takes a cross-sector approach and is relevant for many professionals working with children from birth to 12 years including early childhood educators, healthcare professionals, child protection professionals, family support workers, child and family counsellors, community workers and program managers to engage in work and dialogue to impact the futures of young children.

The event is an exciting opportunity for early years practitioners to improve their understanding and skills in supporting the development of the most disadvantaged children between the ages of 0 – 12.

    Dr. Anton Van der Riet has been the Senior Development Manager, Southern Africa for International Education at Cambridge University Press & Assessment since 2019. He has more than 30 years’ experience in education and earned his D.Ed. degree in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Johannesburg. Before joining Cambridge, he worked for City & Guilds International and held various positions including Regional Business Development Manager and Business Transformation Director, Africa.

    Anton is passionate about education and primarily focuses on growing the Cambridge brand and ensuring that their customers and associates are well-supported, providing world-class service to schools, ministries, education bodies and regulators in Southern Africa.

    Dr Chantell Witten is a registered Dietician and a public health nutrition specialist. Chantell has more than 20 years in public health nutrition with specific focus on infant and young child nutrition. Chantell has wide range of skills ranging from proposal development to programme implementation across several sectors. Chantell has worked in research, academia, the NGO sector and the UN sector. Chantell is a child rights advocate for optimal child health and development. Chantell advocates and promotes nutrition central to health and development – if health is your wealth, nutrition is your currency – from the personal to the public domain.

  • Dr. Corné Kruger
    Dr. Corné Kruger
    Associate Professor - North-West University

    Dr. Kruger is an Associate Professor in the School of Psycho-Social Education of the North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus). Working in the Early Childhood Education subject group she specialises in mathematics and work-integrated learning in Foundation Phase teacher education programmes. Central to her teaching theory is developmentally appropriate mathematics teaching in the early years. She supervises master’s and doctoral students working in the field of mathematics and self-directed learning with focus on collaborative learning and metacognition. Her research projects investigate ways to empower teachers as critical reflective professionals and active participants in communities of practice. She has published several articles and book chapters in accredited peer reviewed publications and delivered numerous papers at national and international conferences.

  • Dr. Nadia Swanepoel
    Dr. Nadia Swanepoel
    Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) - University of Pretoria

    Dr Nadia Swanepoel is a lecturer in the Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) in the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She is involved with the supervision of honours and Master’s degree students. She is currently supervising five honours students and three Master’s students. Her research foci include mathematics teaching and learning in the early childhood education, coding and robotics and professional development of pre-service teachers. Dr Swanepoel completed her doctorate through the University of Johannesburg and investigated how Grade 3 teachers’ mathematics word problem solving instruction could be enhanced through professional development initiatives. Dr Swanepoel has published a number of articles and has presented numerous papers at international and national conferences. She furthermore serves as an external examiner and moderator for a number of higher education institutions.

    Janine started her teaching career in a government school in Pretoria and then joined the independent school sector in 2006 where she has had extensive teaching experience from Pre-School to Grade 7, specifically in languages. She joined Cornwall Hill College in 2010 where she taught English to the Senior Preparatory. She was Head of Languages for the
    Senior Preparatory for 3 years before moving to head up Cornwall Hill College Pre-School.
    Janine is passionate about Early Childhood Development and supporting families in these early years. She loves little people and enjoys reading up on trends in this phase.

    Learner Enrichment Specialist - Cornwall Hill College

    Jeanne-Marie de la Mare is the Learner Enrichment Specialist at Cornwall Hill College Pre-School and has 10 years of experience in the Education Sector, before which she worked in the legal field. In her role as the Learner Enrichment Specialist, she works closely with teachers, students, and families within the Pre-School, where she monitors their progress and provides enrichment and academic support. She works with aspirant teachers, providing support and professional development. She provides a support system to the whole Pre-School and works closely with the head of the Pre-School to ensure children are well-supported.

    My key research and teaching interests are in the field of Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR) and the field of Health Policy (HP). I currently supervise Masters Students in this area. My current research interests are primarily focused on management and leadership in health systems, the politics of health policy formulation and health policy implementation research. I have recently also started working in the field of Early Childhood Development (0-6 years) together with local communities, looking at participation, safety, inclusion and implementation of ECD in context.
